Access Statement for Durrant House

Introduction

Durrant House is located in the centre of the ancient town of Rye and offers five individually decorated rooms all with ensuite facilities. The house dates back over 500 years and is Grade 2 Listed with no lift or accommodation on the ground floor and could therefore make access difficult for guests with limited mobility. The bedrooms are on the first and second floors and are situated at different levels with steps into several rooms most rooms have high ceilings.

  • We are unable to accommodate children under the age of 10 years or any pets.
  • We are situated in the centre of Rye town with all it's shops, restaurants, tea rooms, pubs and historic attractions.
  • The railway station and bus stops are situated at the bottom of the town just a few minutes walk away. Taxis are available at the station but we can easily book a reliable company in advance.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

  • We accept guests between 3.00pm-7.00pm but can adjust times if arranged in advance.
  • We request guests to advise us of their estimated time of arrival.
  • Car parking is on the street outside the house between 5pm and 10am the next day. If street parking is not available directions will be given to a nearby car park, about 200 metres away, which costs £1 per 24 hours.
  • We offer assistance with luggage.

Main Entrance & Reception

  • There are two steps of 5" and 7" upto the outer front door with handrails on both sides.
  • The outer door is closed at dusk and the inner door is always locked. Please ring the bell on arrival.
  • On entry into our house there is a reception area providing seating.

Public Areas - General (Internal)

  • From the reception area the guest lounge is on the left and the breakfast room on the right all areas are fully carpeted.
  • There is a long hall leading through to the garden with one shallow step before you reach the back hall where there is a door leading out to the garden.
  • Carpeted stairs lead off the hall to all floors and guests rooms.
  • The house is centrally heated throughout but all rooms have thermostates on the radiators so guests can adjust the temperature to suit their requirements.
  • There are 15 stairs to the first floor, where Rooms 1-4 are situated, followed by a further 15 stairs to the second floor to Room 5. The stairs are 6" high x 11" deep x 36" wide.

Public Areas - WC

  • There is a downstairs cloakroom in the rear hall which can be made available to guests when using the garden.

Restaurant / Dining Room, Bar & Lounges, Take Away & Cafe

  • Guests are welcome to use the lounge with its array of reading material, board games and honesty bar which stocks soft beverages, wine and beer. We are licensed for the sale of alcohol.
  • The lounge has a two seater knole sofa, two comfortable armchairs and a window seat. It has a coal effect gas fire and is carpeted.
  • Breakfast is served in the Breakfast Room or in the garden when weather permits which has lovely views over the river and marshes.
  • The Breakfast Room also has a coal effect gas fire set in beautiful high fireplace and is carpeted.
  • We play background music in the breakfast room

  • We do not offer a laundry service but we offer the use of an iron and ironing board which maybe used in the bedrooms.

Bedrooms

  • All bedrooms are accessed by the main stairway which has wide shallow steps.
  • All bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and fully carpeted.
  • All bedrooms are ensuite with either a shower and/or bath, WC and wash basin.
  • Hospitality trays are provided which offer several types of tea and coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits and bottled water.
  • Also provided are televisions with remote controls, hair dryers, alarm clocks and a selection of books and magazines.
  • Beds are made with synthetic summer or winter duvets and synthetic pillows, throws and a blanket can be found in the wardrobe.
  • The bedrooms are individually furnished with a wardrobe, chest of drawers/dressing table and additional seating.
  • There is a guest information folder which contains details of emergency fire procedures along with breakfast menu, bar tariff, history of the house and further general information which maybe of use to our guests.

  • On the first floor with two seperate steps at the entrance.
  • Four Poster Double Bed (4'6") with access from both sides.
  • Lovely large bay window with seating overlooking the garden and river.

  • Bedroom 2 (Family Room)
  • On the first floor with a fire door and single step upto the inner landing.
  • King Size Bedstead (5') access both sides, Single Bed (3') access from one side we can also add a Put U Up Bed so this room can accommodate upto a family of 4 guests or used as a twin room - very large, airy, spacious room situated at the front of the house.

  • Situated along the hall from Bedroom 2.
  • Double Bedstead (4'6") access from both sides.

  • Bedroom 4 (Ambassador Room)

  • Situated at the rear of the house with fire exit double doors leading onto the fire escape stairway.

  • Situated on the 2nd Floor through a fire door then up four narrow steps to doorway.
  • Double Bedstead (4'6") with restricted access and head room to one side.
  • Situated at the rear of the house with fire exit single door onto fire escape stairway.

  • All bedrooms are ensuite with either a shower and/or bath, WC and wash basin.
  • All bathrooms have vinyl flooring, rubber safety mats, toiletries, white fluffy towels and face flannels.

Grounds and Gardens

  • We have a lovely flat lawned garden with a sucken patio area overlooking the river and Romney Marsh.
  • Guests are welcome to use the garden.
  • Access is via the rear hallway there are two steps up onto the lawn.
  • Garden furniture is available for guests use.
  • Smoking is permitted in the garden an ashtray can be provided.

Additional Information

  • Durrant House is strictly no smoking.
  • The house is fitted with an extensive smoke and heat detector system linked to a central control panel.
  • There are fire extinguishers and fire doors on each floor.
  • In the event of a fire the alarm will sound and the house must be evacuated via the front door or either of the fire doors in Room 4 or 5 they are clearly marked and lead onto the rear fire escape and out to the side gate and open passageway to the front of the house. Please inform us if you have a hearing impairment and could be unaware of the alarm.
  • Fire information instructions are in all guest information folders in each bedroom.
  • If you have dietary requirements please advise us prior to your arrival and we will try to accommodate your needs.
  • We request walkers to leave dirty boots in the rear hall.
  • We can store cycles in our locked court yard area.
